Just a short distance from Vilnius city center, the Green Lakes (known locally as Žalieji ežerai) offer one of the most scenic and peaceful outdoor destinations in Lithuania. These lakes are part of the Verkiai Regional Park, a protected area rich in biodiversity, forests, and glacial landscapes. For locals and travelers alike, the Green Lakes are a beloved escape into nature.

A Glacial Origin
Formed around 18,000 years ago, the Green Lakes are remnants of the last Ice Age. As glaciers retreated, they carved out depressions in the land, which later filled with water to form these lakes. What makes them special is their distinct greenish-blue hue, caused by high levels of calcium carbonate and other minerals that reflect sunlight in a unique way.
There are six lakes in total:
- Balsys
- Gulbinas
- Mažasis Gulbinas
- Akis
- Raistelis
- Baraukos Akis
Lake Balsys is the best known. It’s deep (up to 47 meters), clean, and surrounded by forests, making it ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing on warm days.

Activities and Experiences
Whether you’re looking for an active day or quiet relaxation, the Green Lakes have something to offer:
- Swimming and sunbathing: The water in Lake Blasys is refreshingly clean, and there are sandy areas where people gather to relax.
- Hiking and biking: Trails circle the lakes and extend into the surrounding forest. They’re great for a walk, a jog, or a leisurely bike ride.
- Picnicking: Shady spots near the lakes provide the perfect setting for a picnic. Just remember to clean up afterward!
- Photography and birdwatching: The natural setting attracts many birds and offers beautiful views, especially in the early morning or at sunset.
In autumn, the area becomes even more magical, with colourful foliage reflecting on the still water. And in winter, if temperatures drop enough, the lakes freeze, creating opportunities for ice skating or snowing walks.
Useful Tips
- Come early on sunny weekends, as the area is popular and can get crowded.
- Bring essentials like water, snacks, swimwear, and comfortable walk shoes.
- Respect the environment. Take any trash with you and don’t disturb wildlife or plants.
- Stay safe. The lakes can be deep in some areas, so swim carefully and only where it’s permitted.
